The Between Waves Exhibition

14/08/2023

On Friday, 4 August, all Cycle 2 students had the opportunity to visit ACCA (Australian Centre for Contemporary Art) to view the Between Waves exhibition.

The experience complimented this year’s Visual Art learning and our reflection upon place and identity. It also showcased the significance of First Nations contemporary arts practice in the national context.

The Cycle 2s thoroughly enjoyed viewing such a diverse range of work including digital interactive, sound sculptures and video works. They asked thoughtful questions while touring the exhibitions with educators and they also made an artwork inspired by Maree Clarke’s Seeing the Invisible #1.

“Thank you so much for bringing your students to ACCA today. It was so great to see all the pre-learning that you had done with the students and their knowledge of the artists and the techniques they use. Your students were so well behaved, and we appreciated the way you contributed to the sessions. We look forward to seeing how the artworks develop in the classroom,” ACCA Education Team.

Bringing Art to life across MMS

05/06/2023

Art is alive and thriving across our school as our Cycle 2, 3 and 4 students discover ceramics, pen and ink drawings, and sculpture.

Brighton Library: Cycle 4 clay work

Visual Art students have been looking at the ceramic work of Melbourne-based artist, Kenny Pittock, who often uses humour and visual puns in his ceramic creations as a way of highlighting important issues. Students made their own clay objects that somehow connected to everyday pop culture or created their own visual pun using ceramics.

Brighton Art Gallery Space: Cycle 3 collaborative drawing work

Cycle 3 students looked at the work of Melbourne artist, Martin Bell, and his large-scale pen and ink drawings that are created in small interconnected sections. Every student in Cycle 3 made at least one tile in this work made up of 100 individual pieces. Each tile was developed in collaboration with the neighbouring young artist’s tile and used similar images that spilled into each other’s space to help bring together the finished work.

Caulfield Art Room:  Cycle 2 exploration of art elements relief panels

Children have been observing Art Elements at Caulfield and made these special relief panels using ‘sculpt it’ modelling material, paint and paint pens. They explored a variety of shapes, lines and warm and cool colours. The panels are displayed as a reference point for the Cycle 2 children as they work on their clay planter pots this term.

Cycle 2 Art students come face to face with themselves

08/05/2023

Colourful collage skills and drawing their reflection while looking in a mirror have helped Cycle 2 children learn about who they are.

In Cycle 2 Art, we have explored the concept of identity. We began by thinking about ourselves as Montessori children and created a collage where we masked our appearance with cut-outs of classroom materials over a photographic portrait. Then we learnt how to draw ourselves using a mirror – it took a lot of concentration to see the details in our face and we made sure we were kind to ourselves as we did our best work! The children then added an alternative background and different clothing that showed more about who they are!
