On Thursday, 8 June, around 40 of our Cycle 3 students attended the Caulfield District Lightning Premiership. This was MMS’ first time participating in this event and we fielded three teams: two soccer teams (Division 1 and 2) and one mixed T-Ball team. After weeks of training, our three teams were ready.
T-Ball
After taking part in a five-week T-Ball unit, our team was excited to head to the ‘major league’! In their Montessori green uniforms, the team – ‘the Kermits’ – looked awesome and they played four games. They won one game and competed valiantly in the other three. At the end of the day, head coach, Daniel Thomas, said: “This team played with great energy and in the spirit of the game, supporting each other and their opponents to do their best.” Go Kermits!!!
“It was really fun spending time with other schools and playing a team sport all day,” Maddie
“It was really fun,” Natalie
“I really liked it because I did it with my friends,” Asher
“I liked hitting the ball,” Austin
“I really enjoyed playing a team sport and getting to know others,” Polly
“I really enjoyed playing against Glen Huntly!” Eva
“I loved having fun with my friends,” Taichi
“I enjoyed the day when I slipped in the mud,” Shanelle
Soccer Division 2
Playing in the Division 2 Championship League and with many first-time players, the ‘Blue Bullets’ showed plenty of dash and skill and secured wins, draws and losses. In her post-match conference, head coach, Albertine Rood, said “The spirit and endeavour of our team was strong all day, and it was remarkable to see the improvement of the group through each game!” Let’s go, Bullets!
Soccer Division 1
After hundreds of hours of practise with playtime soccer games, our Division 1 soccer team was ready to challenge the Division 1 Premier League. Donning red bibs, the ‘Red Doritos’ started strongly and won four of their first five games. After lunch, the winning streak ended abruptly with a comprehensive loss to the eventual premiers of the day— Caulfield Junior College. The Reds fought hard in their final match to finish with a strong 3-3 draw after being 1-3 down at half-time. Head coach Ned Smithfield said: “Although our final position was a strong 3rd place, in the heart and soul category the Red Doritos were the true champions of the day as they played together and for one another.” Well done, Reds!!!
Thank you to all the families for supporting your children to participate in this event. A very special and HUGE thank you to our parent helpers on the day: Tao (Otto’s mum), Lisa (Brady’s mum) and Amy (Austin’s mum).
Well done to all the athletes who came and gave all for their MMS teams. We look forward to the next interschool sports event which is our Term 3 District Athletics Day.
