MMS Bushwalking Wrap-Up

By 05/06/2023No Comments

Last Sunday afternoon  Cycle 1 Balam-Balam and  Cycle 2 Banksia families and teachers met in Dandenong Ranges National Park for a mystical bush walk.

The weather cleared as we met at O’Donohue Picnic Ground where we acknowledged Wurundjeri country together and learned about Sherbrooke Forest and its fascinating flora and fauna.

We then walked to Sherbrooke Falls – a walk that is known for its lyrebird population. Did you know that lyrebirds can mimic the sound of 20 other birds and they are also known to copy the sounds of car alarms and even the chainsaws used by forest workers?

We decided we couldn’t go on a walk without an exciting scavenger hunt and the race was on to see who could carefully spot a lyrebird. This was no easy task as they are known to be experts at hiding in plain sight.

The trek to Sherbrooke Falls was muddy, but nothing a washing machine couldn’t fix! After the 2.4km walk, we met back at the point where we’d started to compare lyrebird – yes, we managed to see them as well as wallabies, kookaburras and some interesting mushrooms.

We all enjoyed the afternoon so much that we are planning to do this again and the MMS bushwalking club has been born!

Enjoy our video with a collage of pictures taken on the day.
