On your marks, get set, go…

11/09/2023

During Term 3, Cycle 3, 4, and 5 students were excited to take part in an Athletics unit as part of their Physical Expression curriculum. This unit centred around introducing students to the dynamic world of track and field and they were exposed to a variety of disciplines including shot put, discus, long jump, triple jump, hurdles and high jump.

The students engaged in a progressive learning journey, starting with fundamental skills and gradually advancing to more complex techniques. They learned the basic principles of each event including proper form, technique and safety considerations. As the term progressed, students embraced a growth mindset, persevering through challenges and celebrating their individual and collective achievements.

The Athletics unit promoted physical prowess and instilled valuable life skills such as resilience, perseverance and the importance of setting and striving for personal goals. Overall, Cycle 3, 4, and 5 students emerged from the Athletics unit with improved physical abilities, increased self-confidence and a deeper appreciation for the world of track and field.

Basketball Action At Hoop Time Tournament

28/08/2023

On Thursday, 17 August Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC) came alive with the spirited Hoop Time Tournament organised by Excursion Basketball Victoria.

The event saw the enthusiastic participation of Cycles 4, 5 and 6 students who created an atmosphere of friendly competition and sportsmanship.

The Montessori Monsters emerged as true champions in the Rookie League, sweeping through the tournament with determination and skill and triumphing in all their games. Their impressive performance certainly showcased their teamwork and prowess on the basketball court. The All-Stars team had a challenging day and encountered tough opponents in the top league.

All participants showed commendable sportsmanship and a passion for the game and the tournament was a memorable and engaging experience for everyone.

Special thanks to our Senior School coaches, Mia and Marlo from Cycle 4 and Raph and Jakob from Cycle 5, who shared their knowledge of the game in training sessions and on the day.

Melbourne Montessori College Cycle 4 Handball Tournament

14/08/2023

Melbourne Montessori College’s handball tournament had spectators on the edge of their seats. Our on-ground reporter, student Nina Goudie, had the privilege of interviewing the players before capturing electrifying moments of the game.

 Pre-game excitement:

Prior to the match, the players’ excitement was palpable. Jasper, Esther and Jess from the competing teams — Blue Berries and Red Dynamite — were enthusiastic about the forthcoming battle on the court.

Action unfolds:

The clash of the titans commenced at precisely 9:36 am as the Blue Berries and Red Dynamite took centre stage in the handball arena.

 First-half highlights:

In an intense first half, Red Dynamite’s star player, Jude, dominated the court with a remarkable display of skill and precision. He wasted no time in stamping his authority, scoring the opening goal for his team. Continuing his impressive form, Jude struck twice more, securing the third and fourth goals in quick succession. The crowd was astounded as he netted the fifth goal and built a formidable lead for Red Dynamite.

 Half-time break:

At the conclusion of the riveting first half, both teams took a much-needed break to catch their breaths and strategise for the decisive second half.

 Second-half drama:

As the clock struck 9:59 am, the game resumed and the spectators were captivated once again. Luka of the Blue Berries showcased his prowess, scoring the first goal of the second half and igniting hope for his team. However, a significant twist occurred as Jude switched teams and, remarkably, managed to score a goal for the Blue Berries.

Despite Red Dynamite’s efforts to maintain their lead, Andreas demonstrated his skills, scoring a vital goal for his team at the nine-minute mark. The contest remained fiercely competitive as Jude continued his goal-scoring spree, netting two more goals for the Blue Berries.

 A controversial moment:

Tensions escalated when Jude was given a yellow card at the 12-minute mark for disputing the umpire Lucy’s decision. This raised eyebrows and added an element of drama to the game.

 Closing minutes:

As the match neared its conclusion, Jude’s performance remained extraordinary and he secured one final goal for the Blue Berries between the 13th and 14th minutes.

 Red Dynamite claims victory:

With the final whistle blown, the scoreboard revealed a nail-biting finish but Red Dynamite emerged triumphant with a narrow 7-6 victory.

Post-match reactions:

After the thrilling contest, our reporter, Nina Goudie, spoke with the players to get their post-match reactions. Holly of Red Dynamite expressed her elation at her team’s triumph and said her favourite moment of the match was when she made a remarkable catch. Meanwhile, Jasper of the Blue Berries said his favourite highlight was witnessing Jude’s yellow card!

 Conclusion:

The Melbourne Montessori College handball tournament showcased the spirit of competition and the talents of these young athletes. Spectators were treated to an exhilarating spectacle and witnessed skill, passion and sportsmanship.

This unforgettable handball match of 2023 will undoubtedly remain a topic of discussion among the school’s community, with the players leaving an indelible mark on the court.

A big thank you to Nina Goudie for reporting the summary of the game and to our match officials, Jasper and Esther, for scoring and timekeeping. Thanks also to field umpire, Lucy, to boundary umpires, Audrey and Jessica, and to the trainers, coaches and all the players for making this community sports event a great finish to the handball unit.

An Energetic End To Term 2

31/07/2023

During Weeks 8 and 9 of Term 2, Brighton students took part in a gymnastics unit run by coaches from Highett Youth Club. The sessions saw Cycle 3, 4 and 5 students launching, rolling, hand-standing, cartwheeling and flipping on and over various pieces of gymnastics equipment. It was certainly a fun and energetic way to round off the term in Physical Expression!

Mastering Handball and Preparing For Gymnastics

19/06/2023

During this term, Cycle 4 and 5 students have been focused on Handball. During our first three sessions, students learnt the basics of the game: the overarm, bounce and side passes, dribbling to the rule of 3 (3 steps, 3 bounces, 3 steps and 3 seconds), shooting at goals and, for those who were brave enough, defending as a goalkeeper.

The final two weeks of Term 2 have focussed on Gymnastics.

Well done, Otto

19/06/2023

Congratulations to Otto (Cycle 3 Walert) who participated in the Kingston Division Cross Country on Tuesday, 30 May at Karkarook Park in Heatherton. Otto put in a tremendous effort in a very strong field of runners who had to navigate a challenging 3.2km track.

Lasting The Course At District Cross Country

05/06/2023

On a beautiful sunny autumn day, 20 gritty and determined Cycle 3 students took on the challenge of competing in the Caulfield Schools District Cross Country Carnival at Caulfield Park.

Running either 2km or 3.2km, all the MMS students who took part put in monumental effort to push themselves to their limits of endurance.

It was fantastic to see our students supporting each other and students from other schools, while spectating and racing throughout the day.

Well done to all our MMS competitors for going the distance on the day and BIG congratulations to Otto who qualified for the Division event in the coming weeks.

Cycle 3s Footy Fever

8/05/2023

During the first two weeks of Term 2, Cycle 3 students have been taking part in footy clinics run by AFL Victoria at Hurlingham Park.

Our trainers, Zack, Nick and Sammy, taught students the basic footy skills of kicking, handballing and marking through games such as Backs, Mids and Forwards, Coins, Big Kick, Angry Ogre and Rucks and Rovers. Some students also choose to join Ned at the park during Tuesday playtime to play a modified non-contact game of footy.

“I learnt how to kick and handball properly,” Harry (Walert)

“I learnt how to kick properly, which I never knew how to do,” Bella (Walert)

“Zack (our trainer) looked like Ed Sheeran!” Pearl (Nar Nar Goon)

“Running in all the games was really hard!” Carmel (Warin)

“In the first week, ‘Coins’ was my favourite game because we had to kick lots of goals,” James (Nar Nar Goon)

“My favourite game was ‘Backs, Forwards and Mids’,” Eddie (Walert)

“Our favourite game was ‘Angry Ogre’,” Arielle, Audree, Oliver and Julian (Walert)

“Go Dees!” Ned (PE Guide)

Ultimate Frisbee

27/03/2023

This term in PE at Brighton, Cycle 3, 4 and 5 students have enjoyed developing their frisbee skills by playing Ultimate Frisbee. This is a team sport with similarities to netball, rugby or soccer but there is no contact or referee and the ‘ball’ is a frisbee instead.

They can’t run when they have the frisbee, only pivot and pass it to another teammate. Their teammates can run anywhere to receive a pass. A team completes passes until they catch the frisbee in the other team’s end zone, which counts as a goal. Students need to use their running, catching, passing and tactical skills to score. Players can’t hit or knock down other players or grab the disc from someone’s hands – that’s a foul. The integrity of Ultimate Frisbee depends on each player upholding the ‘Spirit of the Game’ so there is no umpire or referee and calls are made between players.

As we approach the end of our unit, Cycle 4 and 5 students will be able to participate in a community sports event within their cycles and take on various roles like player, coach, trainer, game official and reporter.

Some Senior School students would like to form a team to compete at a one-day interschool sports tournament at Melbourne University later this year – so watch this space!

For Cycle 3 students, we will continue to develop their frisbee skills through practice drills and modified games. Interested students will have the choice to play Ultimate Frisbee ‘scratch matches’ on Tuesday afternoons at Hurlingham Park with Ned.
