A World Cup Experience

By 31/07/2023No Comments

On Friday, 21 July, 54 Cycle 3, 4 and 5 students attended the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Read on as Ned and student, Austin, relive their experiences of the excursion.

On Friday, 21 July 2023, Melbourne Montessori School was taken on an exhilarating excursion to the FIFA Women’s World Cup match featuring Nigeria vs Canada. Everyone was excited as we embarked on our journey to AAMI Stadium. We got on the tram and were soon en route to Malvern station.

We got to AAMI Stadium at around 11 o’clock and made our way to our seats. When we found out where our seats were, we were ecstatic. We were sitting right behind the goals! Chatter about the teams and players filled the air.

The players displayed their absolute mastery of the game called soccer, leaving us in awe. Every time a single muscle moved, we could see it. The players were not only in control of the ball, but their bodies as well.

In a split second we were on the edge of our seat, wondering whether the Canadian striker would send the ball rocketing into the back of the net, or if the Nigerian goalie would take advantage of her height and reach the ball to stop it with one hand. The Nigerian goalie did just that and developed a mindset that nobody would score against her, leading her to be the player of the match.

As the final whistle blew, signalling the end of the match, we made our way back to school and were surprised at the fact that the final score was 0–0. The day was not only a way to get out of schoolwork, but also a way to learn valuable life lessons like sportsmanship, determination and teamwork!

The trip to the women’s soccer match between Nigeria and Canada was an adventure we will never forget. From the journey to get there to the comical jokes with our friends, it was all astonishing. I would like to thank Ned for organising a way for us to learn more about soccer, the teachers for coming along and making our experience amazing, and thank you to Daniel for approving all this. We are eagerly waiting for the next chance to have another experience as perfect as this.

Last Friday, 22 July, 53 Cycle 3, 4 and 5 students attended the FIFA Women’s World Cup to watch the Group B match between Canada and Nigeria at Melbourne’s AAMI Park. Thankfully, Melbourne’s weather turned it on and provided a glorious sunny winter’s day for the match. Although the game ended being a 0–0 draw, students, staff and parents were entertained by a terrific penalty save by the Nigerian goalie and a very lively, energetic crowd of over 20,000 punters who sang, Mexican waved and celebrated being together at this once-in-a-lifetime sporting event. A huge thank you to all our parent helpers on the day who made supervising MMS students through a packed stadium so easy. Both teams will be playing Australia in the Group B, so all the best for our Matilda’s!
