Swim-tastic Skills & Action Heroes Alert

30/10/2023

During Week 2, Cycle 3 students have enjoyed participating in the incredibly rewarding one-week swimming program.

Throughout the week, they made remarkable progress in their swimming skills, learning the fundamentals of freestyle and backstroke. It was terrific to see such determination and enthusiasm on display in the pool as many of them progressed from being non-swimmers to confidently gliding through the water. Some students even advanced to mastering the breaststroke—a testament to their hard work and to the effectiveness of the program.

In addition to learning different swimming strokes, the students also acquired essential water safety skills. They gained confidence in diving and practiced treading water, ensuring they not only learn to swim but also develop a deep understanding of how to stay safe in and around water.

This program has not only provided valuable life skills but has also fostered a sense of accomplishment and pride among the students, boosting their self-esteem and well-being. It has been a truly successful week of growth and learning in the water.

A big thank you to all the staff and instructors at Starfish Swim School. Many students reported to their teachers how friendly and fun their instructor was! Check their website for more information about private lessons: https://www.starfishswimschool.com.au/.

Action Heroes Alert

30/10/2023

The Volleyball Victoria Primary Schools Cup 2023 at the State Volleyball Centre in Dandenong North on October 24, was a whirlwind of spikes, sets and serves. It also served up a healthy dose of fun and laughter. Our budding volleyball stars showcased their athletic prowess, their impeccable sportsmanship and, sometimes, their talent for dramatic action hero dives!

Each of the six teams taking part was fortunate enough to be coached by a Senior School student from Cycle 4 or 5. Thank you to Raph, Jess, Yasmin, Mia, Julian and Tahj for all their help on the day and for providing their charges with tactics, advice and motivation to do their best and have fun.

The tournament was the culmination of our Volleyball unit in Cycle 3 and the Cycle 3 team has been impressed by the commitment and patience students demonstrated in the lead up to the day, practising in their teams and honing their volleyball skills.

On Your Marks…

The District Athletics event on Thursday, 7, September at Duncan MacKinnon Reserve athletics track was a resounding success. Cycle 3 students competed against students from local primary schools in events including sprints, middle distance races, shot put, high jump, discus, long jump, triple jump, hurdles and the thrilling 4 x 100m relay. The day was marked by a spirit of endeavour, personal challenge and, most importantly, fun. MMS students certainly enjoyed testing their athletic abilities while creating some lasting memories.

Jump Around, Jump Around, Jump Up, Jump Up and Get Down!

16/10/2023

In Cycle 3 Physical Expression, some students have taken on the Jump Rope for Heart challenge and have embarked on an energetic journey of skipping, twirling and jumping. This initiative encourages physical fitness and delivers crucial life lessons about the importance of regular physical activity and a balanced diet for overall wellbeing and physical health. Students have learned that taking care of their heart goes beyond the rhythmic motion of the jump rope — it extends to making healthy choices and nurturing their bodies.

It has been heart-warming to witness these young learners wholeheartedly participating in the challenge and engaging in spirited skipping sessions during playtime. As they jump, they’re improving their cardiovascular health and raising awareness and funds for people affected by heart-related illnesses. This optional initiative enriched students’ physical education, fostered a sense of community and social responsibility and made a lasting impression on their understanding of physical wellbeing and the power of collective action.

First Aid Incursion

28/08/2023

During Week 2 of PE, Cycle 3 students participated in a St John Ambulance First Aid incursion. They learnt about the DRSABCD action plan that assesses whether someone has a life-threatening condition. DRSABCD stands for Danger Response Send Airway Breathing CPR Defibrillation. Students also learnt who to contact in an emergency and how to provide information when making an emergency phone call. We even made a new friend, Jeff, who allowed students to practise chest compressions on him. Thanks Jeff!

Our presenter also suggested that each student checks with their parents about how make an emergency call on their parent’s phone number from the phone’s locked screen.
