JUMPing into Basketball With Their Buddies

13/11/2023

In Cycle 5’s Physical Expression journey this term, students have enthusiastically taken part in the Junior United Mentoring Program (JUMP). This is a school-based basketball initiative that unites students from specialist and mainstream high schools in a safe and welcoming sports environment.

Over the past eight weeks, our Cycle 5 students have been involved in a comprehensive basketball program that includes coaching courses, referee and officials’ training and joint training sessions with Berendale Specialist School.

The program finished with a mini tournament, organised by our Cycle 5 students for the Berendale students, and it was an exciting culmination of their efforts. This initiative is a fantastic opportunity to engage in basketball and it’s an educational platform aimed at breaking down barriers within the local community.

It fosters physical fitness, teamwork, leadership and sportsmanship, while promoting the development of social skills, time management and commitment.

Importantly, the tournament promoted collaboration between Cycle 5 students, built community engagement and supported the physical and social development of every student.

As a teacher, I was extremely proud of the effort and care that MMS students showed their ‘buddies’ from Berendale. If Cycle 5 students are keen to continue with similar opportunities in sport, these are some local organisations who run similar programs throughout the school year and they are looking for volunteers to help coach and run events.

Hitting the Surf

16/10/2023

On Friday, 8 September 2023, Cycle 5 students embarked on an exciting excursion to URBNSURF as part of their Physical Expression program. The outing aligned with the National Swimming and Water Safety Framework and provided students with knowledge about rips, tides and currents, aquatic safety awareness, rescue techniques, survival strategies and surf skills. Throughout the day, students could take part in Learn to Surf and Surf Swimming lessons, enhancing their water skills and safety awareness.

Although the weather resembled Antarctic conditions, Cycle 5 students took to the waves with great energy. Later they took to the hot spa baths outside at speed! It was a day filled with education, adventure and fun in the water.

News Flash! Honey Badgers outplay Ball Fondlers in epic handball showdown at Hurlingham Park

Hurlingham Park, Friday, 28 July 2023: In a fierce handball clash that left Cycle 5 quite disappointed, the Honey Badgers triumphed over the Ball Fondlers in a game that brought high-flying action and antics under the sunny skies of Hurlingham Park.

The scenic backdrop set the stage for a showdown between these two teams. The sun was out, the grass was green, and the atmosphere was buzzing with excitement.

The team spirit of the Ball Fondlers and the Honey Badgers was as bright as the day itself. Spectators couldn’t help but notice the camaraderie and good-natured banter between the players as they exchanged high-fives, fist bumps and a few dance moves.

The Honey Badgers showed no mercy as they charged ahead with their high-octane offense and impenetrable defense. Their teamwork was as sweet as honey and they kept the Ball Fondlers on their toes with a flurry of quick passes and sly tricks.

The Ball Fondlers put up a valiant effort but couldn’t quite match the Honey Badgers’ skill.

In the end, the Honey Badgers emerged victorious with a final score that left no room for doubt. The crowd erupted in cheers and the Honey Badgers celebrated like they’d just discovered a beehive full of honey. They danced and pranced to mark their triumph.

Both teams gathered for a group photo with smiles on their faces (well…as smiley as you can get when losing to your teachers for a second time).

So, there you have it, folks! An unforgettable game that showcased the indomitable spirit of both teams. Until the next electrifying match!
